She was minding her own business.

Then she became somebody’s gift. Somebody’s surrogate. Somebody’s first baby mama. Her mistress’s handmaiden. His wife’s thorn. And the woman her mistress grew to despise.

An entanglement she never chose. A throuple she never auditioned for.

She ran. Then later — she was evicted.

But the God of the wilderness knew her name. He made her return to the place she was an unwanted guest and told her to submit. But He gave her a promise to multiply her seed, despite those who threw her away.

“They used her. They dismissed her. They put her out. But El Roi — the God Who Sees — never looked away.”

She was thirsty for something different.

Five husbands and still empty. The man she was with now wasn’t even hers. She wasn’t a harlot — she was handed labels she never earned by people who never asked her story. She came to the well at noon — not at dawn like everyone else — because the whispers and the stares had become too heavy to carry in a crowd.

She was not looking for a prophet. She was not looking for a miracle. She came for water. What she got was a conversation that changed the course of her life — and a whole city’s eternity.

Jesus didn’t call her out. He called her up. He didn’t rehearse her past to shame her — He revealed it to show her He already knew, and still showed up at her well. He was calling her out of her drought.

She left her water pot. She ran back to town. And the woman who came to the well in secret left as the first evangelist in John’s Gospel — bringing a whole city to Christ with four words and a testimony.

“She came for water and left with a testimony. He didn’t offer her religion — He offered her living water. And she dropped everything to go pour it out.”
